Reversal Spells
Wiccan Witches try our best not to harm. Cursing others is considered bad form, even if they cursed you first. We aren’t perfect, after all, and sometimes an asshat is just begging for it, and maybe we lose our temper. Like when the little girl in Practical Magic gave the nasty boy chicken pox.
When that happens, something unfortunate, chicken pox for example, will most likely befall the asshat.
But then sadly, something unfortunate will also befall the witch, because whatever we send out comes back to us, tripled. That goes for magic, or gifts, or smiles, or blessings, or, yes, curses. Even deserved curses.
However, there are two methods far better than cursing or hexing those who richly deserve it, without putting our own well-being at risk, and both those ways make use of the negative bullshit sometimes aimed our way.
Method 1:
REFLECT NEGATIVE ENERGY BACK TO SENDER
We must become like mirrors, so negativity aimed at us never penetrates, but is instead reflected back to the sender. Using actual mirrors can help us visualize, remember, and make our “shields up” state easy and automatic.
A Mirror Enchantment Spell
Buy a small packet of tiny mirror tiles, peel and stick. They’re tiny, 1” to 3” squares. You can find all sizes on Amazon. They even have circles!
Besides these tiles, you’ll want some purification incense such as rosemary or sage, 4 white candles, some moon water or blessed water in the west, and a cauldron or deep, dark bowl in the center.
Cast a circle or create sacred space in your own way, if you like.
Light your incense, and wave a little of its smoke over yourself. Visualize it purifying any negativity within you.
Move with the smoking incense clockwise, around the area where you’ll be working, tracing out a circle. I move from north to north, wafting it with my hands to purify and empower the space.
Set the incense and its censer aside. Light the first white candle in the North, and welcome the energies of Earth. Light the second white candle in the East and welcome the energies of Air. Light the third white candle in the south and welcome the energies of Fire. Light the fourth white candle in the west and welcome the energies of water.
Take up your mirrored titles. Carry them to the still smoking incense and waft them with the smoke to purify them.
Carry them to the east, and say: “Light illuminates darkness,” as you hold the tiles in the light of the flame.
Carry them to the south, and say: “Heat warms the cold,” as you hold the tiles near the flame.
Carry them to the west, and say: “Experience teaches the ignorant,” as you hold the tiles in the west. If you have placed moon water here, sprinkle the tiles with it.
Carry them to the north, and say: “Love is power,” as you hold them there.
Return to the center and place the tiles into the cauldron or deep bowl. Hold your hands over them, palms downward. Visualize super-charging them with the elemental energies you have conjured here. Your hands are guiding it to gather and infuse the tiles.
You can use words here if you like.
Mirror, mirror, mundane no longer,
Witch’s magic makes you stronger!
All around my space like armor,
Send all harm back to the harmer!
Only good can come inside,
Only light may here abide!
So mote it be
(Relax, release the magic into the mirror tiles.)
Finish the rite by thanking the four directions as you extinguish each candle, then taking up your circle if you cast one.
It’s a good idea to ground yourself with a grain-based snack after magic.
Using the enchanted mirror tiles
Now that your mirror titles are all charged up, you can peel and stick them wherever you feel they are needed, always facing outward, away from you and your home/space. Here are some suggestions.
Put a tile in a corner of each window of any room in your home in which you feel vulnerable, or, maybe on the window that faces the direction of the attacker, if you know that. Place them with the mirrored part facing OUT.
As you place them, remember that you have charged these to reflect back only negative energy. All positive vibes can still pass through. Bonus, along with the sender’s negative vibes, they’re getting some bonuses, light, warmth, wisdom, and love.
Put a tile on the back of your computer or cell phone.
Put one on the outside of your mailbox.
Put on on the back of your television or Roku box or whatever you use, see if you suddenly lose interest in the news! (I need to try this.)
One caveat
Putting a mirror face out near your front door is considered bad feng-shui, and is said to turn back the wealth that wants to flow in. So even though we cast with the intent of letting positive energies in, I would not put a mirror tile near my front door. I’d cover that area by using a witch jar.
Method 2:
TRANSMUTE THE NEGATIVE ENERGY AND USE IT
This is not my original spell. It’s from Dorothy Morrison. I’ve used it and tweaked it so many times it probably bears little resemblance to the original by now—spells are like recipes, that way—but she is the source and deserves credit because it’s my Favorite. Spell. Ever.
You’ll need a baking sheet, a bunch of tin foil, some salt, and three candles, black, gray, and white. Also a small piece of paper and pen, a lighter, and a wish. Any wish you want.
Line the baking sheet in the aluminum foil so you don’t ruin it.
Melt the bottom of the black candle and stick it, upright, on the left end of the sheet.
Ditto the gray, and stick it in the middle of the sheet.
Then melt the white one, and stick it to the far right.
Draw a line of salt from the black candle to the gray candle, making an arrow at the end pointing at the gray.
Draw a line of salt from the gray candle to the white, with an arrow pointing to the white.
Draw a circle of salt around the white candle that overlaps the arrow’s point.
Write your wish on the piece of paper. Hold it and visualize it being true and real in your life right now. Feel the feelings you would feel if it were, feel them now. Be grateful in advance. Be that sure.
Fold the paper and place it within the circle of salt around the white candle.
Now you’re ready to begin.
The Transmutation of Energy Spell
Light the black candle. As it burns, spend moments watching it attract and absorb every ounce of negative energy that has been sent your way in word, in deed, in thought.
Trace the path of that energy entering the flame, and moving into the blackness, and down it and into the salt, gaining speed and momentum as it travels through the salt into the gray candle, filling it up.
Light the gray candle and again, visualize the energy that has moved through the salt, and so been purified, moving up through the gray candle, dancing in its flame, and moving down again.
This is now neutral energy. It has no charge. It’s just energy. As the gray candle burns imagine it revving up the flow, so the energy is moving even faster. Trace its path back down the candle and into the salt, shooting along the path now toward the white candle, bursting out of the salt and into the circle where it meets your wish and your will.
This neutral energy absorbs the charge of your wish, spinning and whirling around it and up the white candle to its flame, where it gains even more energy, and spins back down again, and all around your wish, and up and down and around.
Take the paper and light it from the white candle’s flame. Drop it in the salt circle and let it burn, releasing your wish into production, so to speak.
Let the candles burn until they burn out, but do not leave the room. If you have to leave, you can snuff them. It’s okay. You have to keep an eye on them while they’re lit so you don’t burn your house down. This is why I use altar candles (also called chime candles). They’re small and burn faster.
When finished, gather up the whole spell in the tin foil, quick and easy. It’s recommended you bury the leftovers.
Let go of the spell once it’s been cast. Forgetting about the wish gives it time to grow.
Be sure to ground yourself. A snack is a good idea after spellwork.
Spellwork is performance art
Make it fun and fanciful. I use a censer on chains that I can swing. Or I use a bowl burner and waft the smoke with a raven feather. I have a special bottle for my moon water, and it looks as if a genie could live in it. I use my wand or staff or athame to cast a circle.
The more vivid, the more appealing to the senses, the more powerful the magic. We are calling up our creative sides, our inner child. We are sending up a living prayer, but more than a prayer, a spell is our will given form. A thought made into a rite, into movements, scents, colors, words, all which match its energy. A spell is a thought made into a thing just as our wish is a thought that will become a thing.
Fun, right?
