A partial lunar eclipse, visible to most of North America will occur Monday morning (3/25/2024) at 3:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time in the sign of Libra.
My favorite astrologist, Susan Miller, says that eclipses are the most dramatic ways the Universe uses to get our attention. Eclipses, she says, can “uproot” our lives, bring big surprises, and force us to take action we need to take, but haven’t taken. They are forces of change.
First, the physical
A lunar eclipse is when the earth is right between the sun and the moon, so the earth’s shadow blocks the sunlight from touching the moon. As you know, the moon doesn’t have light of her own, but is mirror of the sun. So it’s earth’s shadow veiling the face of the moon as we three pass each other. She’ll still be visible, but in a reddish glow as the shadow of Gaia passes.
Lunar (moon) eclipses always happen when the moon is full, and always come two weeks before a solar (sun) eclipse. Solar eclipses always happen when the moon is new and still invisible to us on earth. The astrological signs in which this pair of eclipses occur will always be opposite each other (six months apart) on the horoscope wheel.
The Lore
Lore says that eclipses reveal that which has been hidden. As the earth’s shadow moves across the face of the moon, I imagine it peeling away a veil, to reveal what lies beneath. The things we didn’t see before the eclipse, might become obvious in the days or weeks afterward.
In astrology, it is believed that eclipses mark major turning points in our lives; birth, pregnancy, death, marriage, divorce, promotions, firings, major life events. They are times of change and evolution. And these are irreversible changes. We can never go back to who we were before this evolution. We can move past it, but we can’t go backwards. Just like we can’t be 29 again after our 30th birthday. Trust me on this, I’ve been trying for decades. I had one of my own daughters convinced I was 29 for several most of her childhood.
Sometimes people, places, or situations can get “eclipsed” out of our lives. I imagine the moon scraping a layer away from us on earth. It’s easy to visualize that layer as the shadow she takes on. She’s exfoliating the old skin away, to reveal what is bright and fresh and new. To reveal the next layer. To push us to the next level.
Eclipses can be exciting, wonderful, bewildering, or painful. But either way, we level up. We evolve. We grow. Whatever is eclipsed out is replaced by something better. That birth of the better is the very energy associated with the solar eclipse two weeks from now, and we’ll talk about that then.
How powerfully this impacts each of us depends on numerous other aspects, and I am not an astrologer. (I’ll hook you up at the end, though.) Any of these things could occur within a day to a week after the eclipse. They could happen to you, or to someone you know in a way that ripples out to you, or to a stranger in a way that impacts you unexpectedly.
The Witchery
The magical power of an eclipse is the magic of peeling away layers, of removing veils, of revealing secrets. It’s the perfect time to make Eclipse Water, which will have a very different energy to it than your ordinary moon water has. Blessed water, left to charge during a lunar eclipse will absorb the energy of the sun, the earth, and the moon, all aligned, with a tinge of influence from the sign, in this case Libra. (More on that below.)
Another beneficial item to leave in a moon-facing window or outside overnight during the eclipse is any item you use for divination. A black mirror, pendulum, tarot cards (indoors only), rune stones, yes-no stones, crystal balls, etc. Also, any tools associated with water; cups, chalices, bowls used in ritual or as spiritual focal points.
All your goddess sculptures want to be in a window or outside to witness the eclipse, too. It’s a powerful time.
The energy of revelation is not the only one. There’s an element of rocket fuel to this energy. It pushes us forward.. (We don’t really go backward, though it appears that way sometimes.) The lunar eclipse energy lights a fire under our asses to force us to move, already. Take the leap, make the jump.
What a beautiful power-booster for any and all magic.
By making Eclipse water, we can capture a bit of it for future use. But there’s nothing more potent than the moment itself. And I think it’s going to be warm, too. I hope it will be clear!
The most important magical tool to charge beneath the eclipse, is ourselves!
This eclipse in particular
The Moon in Libra is generally a time when it’s tough to focus on work, and we’d rather play, dream, or just be. An eclipse is like a regular full moon on steriods, so this energy will be multiplied. You’ll feel it even more if you’re an air sign like me.
It’s also a moon that yearns for peace. A sense of fairness becomes a compelling force. Emphasized by the eclipse, the energy of peace and fairness will be potent. This is something the world could use. Dare I hope some of the humanity’s hotspots will eclipse past war and violence?
Libra is ruled by Venus, which is all about beauty and love, pampering and luxury, basking in lush abundance. This is a great time to do some spring cleansing and beautification of our homes. And if we can’t focus on work anyway, what better time?
Beauty, Love, Play, and Peace. A new level of growth, a surprising change that rockets us forward. How perfectly does this energy mesh with the rebirth energy of spring?
I feel like this eclipse is going to be a winner!
