I’m again sharing with some of the entires from one of my own Books of Shadows There’s not just one, of course, there are multiple binders of them, but as I thumbed through for today’s topic, I found two I thought would be great. The fire spell is flashy. It’s the kind of thing you’d expect a witch to do.
The knot magic is more general, solitary, and freaking potent. So let’s dive in.
Knot Magic
Traditionally, we use a thirteen-inch length of cord, string, ribbon, yarn. Want some kicks sympathy oomph, use a long hair from the subject of the spell, which can be yourself or someone for whom you are working with their knowledge and consent.. And ever mind the Rule of Three. Three times what you give returns to thee.
The basics are these. You will tie nine knots in the string in a particular order, saying a rhyming chant on each strand.
The order of the knots:
First knot: Center of the strand
Second knot: one end of the strand
Third knot: the opposite end of the strand
Fourth knot: between knots 1 & 2 (center & end)
Fifth knot: between knots 1 & 3 (center & other end)
Sixth, seventh, eighteen and ninth knots: between existing knots working from the center out to one side, then from the center out to the other side.
The Nine Knots General Chant
As you tie the knots, center, end, end, and the points in-between, (because there is power in the in-between things of our world), you say the following, one line per knot as you tie it. And when you tie each knot, jerk it tight, releasing your will. Put some passion into this.
After the ninth knot, tie the ends of the string together to form a loop. Hang it in a northward-facing window, the direction of manifestation.
Knot of one, the spell’s begun Knot of two, the spell is true Knot of three, so mote it be Knot of four, the open door Knot of five, the spell’s alive Knot of six, the spell is fixed Knot of seven, part the heavens Knot of eight, the open gate Knot of nine, the thing is mine!
Now, the beauty of this spell is that you can customize it, write your own lines for specifics about the magical goal. Get some words of emotion in there, the feeling of having the thing, the joy of that. That’s the vibration we want to achieve. So keep that in mind throughout.
And as always, to bind the spell well every time, let the spell be spake in rhyme.
As an example, a money spell might go something like:
Knot of one, wealth is fun Knot of two, worries-few Knot of three, flow to me Knot of four, je t'adore! Knot of five, my magic's alive Knot of six, I create the fix Knot of seven, come eleven Knot of eight, abundance great Knot of nine, my fortune's mine!
And a healing spell might be:
Knot of one, the healing sun Knot of two, and moonlight blue Knot of three, are healing me Knot of four, my health restored Knot of five, my body thrives Knot of six, my health is fixed Seventh knot, the curing shot Knot of eight I'm feeling great Knot of nine, I'm well and fine!
And how about a love spell?
Knot of one, bring me the one
Knot of two, and we'll be two
Knot of three, so mote it be
Knot of four, he's at my door
Knot of five, our love's alive
Knot of six, together-pics
Knot of seven, love's like heaven
Knot of eight, I'm with my mate
Knot of nine, I'm *his, he's mine! (*or hers/she's, or theirs/they're)
A little more about knot magic
During the burning times, when women were arrested on charges of witchcraft one of the first things their always-male captors did was cut off their hair.
It was believed, you see, that a witch could “braid a man’s fate” by braiding her hair, and casting her will, or saying magic words while she did it.
I love the idea that I could braid a man’s fate by braiding my hair. I have someone in mind. 😉 I feel a braid coming on.
Braiding and knot-tying have been parts of natural magic and indigenous system of magic for as long as there’s been magic at all. It’s the repetitive motion combined with the memorized chant that distract the practical mind so that the intuitive part, the magical part, the connected part, can take the wheel for a bit. And it’s that burst of power when we pull the knot tight, and emphasize the final word of each line, that boost our will into the reality. When we feel the emotion of winning it, having it, achieving it, finding it—that’s when the magic happens!
