As Above, So Below
Today's Abraham Daily Quote was in my morning email
Whenever you’re trying to understand anything that is as huge as all of the Universe, or as huge as all eternity, all you have to do is bring it back to something simple that you do understand, and ask the questions and apply them. And then you can understand the Whole. Everything that’s true of the Whole is true of the individual.
It reminded me of the saying so often repeated among magical practitioners:
As above, so below.
But that's not the full quote. The full quote is:
As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul.
The source of that quote is Hermes Trismegistus. Hermes is said to have been a "legendary" figure, possibly a blend of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. However, he is mentioned in Islamic and Bahá'à writings. Some equate him with the prophet Idris, who has also been identified as the biblical Enoch, Elijah, Ezra, and Alexander-the-Great's cook, Andreas.
For so many to write about the prophet, it seems likely he was a real person. (Apparently several!)
He is the author credited with The Hermetica, a collection of philosophical writings, most dating from 100 to 300 BCE, that form the basis of Hermeticism. True hermeticism says the best way to achieve enlightenment and have ancient divine wisdom revealed to you is to study the writings of Hermes, Zoroaster, Orpheus, Pythagoras, Plato, the Chaldeans, and the Kabbala. Modern followers have broadened this to include the study of many religious, spiritual, and philosophical texts, old and new.
So that's a little background on where one of our favorite sayings comes from. Hermes, "the Thrice-Greatest" a philosopher and prophet.
But what does it mean?
It means we must look for patterns, because where we find a pattern in one part of creation, no matter how big or small, it must be repeated in all parts of creation.
As above, so below
This is the obvious example, but let's see how far we can take it. When you throw a stone into the water, it creates ripples that expand outward. Therefore the same thing must happen in every part of nature. In the open sea, it might join with other ripples and become a tsunami, or it it evaporate into hot dry air, only to rain down again and sink deep into the earth and join with other trickles, and become the water you eventually drink into your body, where it feeds your cells and becomes a part of you.
When a butterfly flaps its wings, it creates a current in the air that spreads just like the ripples in water. It might join with other currents and become a hurricane. It might become part of the next breath you inhale, and release its oxygen into your bloodstream where it will be carried to your cells. It becomes a part of you.
When you make a singing bowl sing, the sound waves go on and on forever. They reduce below the level of your ability to hear them, but their vibration remains.
The Big Bang that started the physical universe's current cycle sent ripples of its force blasting outward. Those ripples in the form of light can still be seen, just now reaching us in the ,Cosmic Microwave Background. Those ripples move right through us, and there's no way they aren't in some microscopic way, affecting us, becoming a part of us.
As within, so without
I always think of how much an atom looks like a solar system when I think of as within, so without.
As we are on the inside, we are on the outside. The more angry things I focus on, (news!) the more things will come along to make me angry.
What I truly believe, I will truly manifest.
When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.
An imbalance in your health will likely be reflected in imbalances in other parts of our lives.
As the Universe, so the Soul
This is one I haven't explored as much. It's the lesser known third part of the famous sentence. As the Universe, so the Soul. To know what our souls are doing, we must observe what the universe is doing.
What can we observe the Universe doing?
It's expanding. And the rate of expansion is getting faster, not slowing down.
So the soul, our soul, our being, our consciousness must also be expanding, and the rate of expansion must also be accelerating.
How does Consciousness expand? Through experience. That's why we're here. Consciousness, that one great awareness that is us has an innate and insatiable need to expand. Why else pour beams of itself into so many different kinds of creatures?
Single celled organisms, bacterium, viruses, microscopic teddy bears of every shape and size, insects, plants, fungi, animals, birds, trees, mountains, rocks, oceans, rivers, clouds, skies, atmosphere, storms, rain, snow, ozone, space, stars, planets, asteroids, and all the rest.
Every single part of creation has some level of consciousness. Every cell leans toward what is preferred and away from what is not preferred, toward warmth, away from cold for example, toward sources of nutrients and away from nutritional dead zones, toward better conditions away from challenging ones.
That's a level of consciousness and it's also the engine of evolution. Leaning toward what is preferred is how you evolve.
Consciousness has evolved its way all the way to the human being, the most conscious of all creation so far.
But evolution doesn't stop.
Consciousness isn't going anywhere
The world is scary today.
A lot of people are experiencing anxiety now that we are living the consequences of generations of human environmental malpractice. The climate is scary.
We've invented technology that will soon be smarter than us and free of our attempted constraints. A.I. is scary.
The rights of our daughters are being stripped away in state after state. The GOP is scary.
But those things needn't be quite so scary if we understand that what we are is Consciousness. The whole, that thing some call God or Goddess, our Source, is eternal. Source is awareness. It is the very essence of being. It is existence itself.
It is forever. We are eternal. We will continue to grow and learn and expand through our every experience for always. We will always be us. And we have always been us.
Neanderthals buried their dead with ritual and gifts <–Link
A recent discovery of Neanderthal remains revealed that they were far more advanced than we ever knew. (Well, some of us knew.) They buried tools and even flowers with their dead. The bones also showed signs of having been injured, tended, and healed.
That's Consciousness. Therefore, that's us.
We have ancestors to whom we are not related by blood. The Consciousness that experienced life through the eyes of T-rex is the same Consciousness that is experiencing life right this moment as me, as you.
Only, not exactly the same, for every experience has made Consciousness more than it was before And we have access to every bit of it. We can draw upon this vast well of knowledge and wisdom we have built. This is, I believe, the true meaning of the "Akashic Records" you hear people talk about accessing. It's the well of collected experience.
We have access to all the answers we need to remove the CO2 from our atmosphere and to reduce our harmful impact on the earth. And I believe we are track to make the big, drastic changes needed, in time. I think we can, and I think we will.
The earth will heal herself and restore her own balance if we let her. We just to stop inflicting new harm long enough to give her the chance.
As above, so below
If we are beaten to within an inch of our life, we can still heal. But first the beating must stop. We can drag ourselves home to our beds and sleep. And when we wake we can take a hot bath some medicine to ease our pain. If it's very bad, we can go to a hospital where the first thing they would do is put us into a bed with a pillow and a blanket. And there they would tend our wounds and sooth our pain.
Our bodies would heal themselves. Therefore, so can the earth.
We have been beating our beloved mother, and we have not stopped. Knowing this, we can pull our punches, we can stop delivering so many of them so hard and so fast. We can give her time to get to her bed and tend to her wounds. We can lovingly help her tend to her wounds. We can give her rest.
Gaia is a living being. We should treat her as our Mother and our Goddess. We are her children. She is the first level of Consciousness manifesting on Earth. Manifesting through Earth. Experiencing existence as the life-giving planet.
And so we must love...
For if we love, then love infiltrates all levels. Above, below, within, without, the universe, the soul. The more we can love, the better everything becomes on all levels.
We must find ways to demand less of our mother, to give her time to rest and heal. In turn, she will give us time to rest and means to heal from all our human ills. If we nurture, we receive nurturing. By healing others, we heal ourselves.
We can't just say we love, we must be love, we must act in love. If we love our mother, we try in every way within our control to stop harming her, (remember the only commandment, Harm none!) and we must lend our energy and our efforts to her healing, and in return we will be healed.
Isn't it cool how that works?
